Christmas Spend Trends

From a gift retailer’s perspective, it’s never too early to start shopping for Christmas, and according to a report by EBay Ads UK, 23% of consumers will be starting their Christmas shopping this month. Additionally, two fifths (41%) of respondents said that they will have finished their Christmas shopping before December.

More good news is that 30% of Christmas shoppers are planning to spend more on gifts and festive items this year, as confidence gradually returns. Last year, the average spend was £527.88 compared to £551.34 in 2019. Only 15% plan to spend less.

Gift givers said that this year they will be prioritising good value for money (58%) and quality of products (44%). In addition, some 12% would be treating loved ones to extravagant gifts.

Three in five respondents (60%) feel optimistic that they will be able to celebrate as usual, while half (49%) think that this Christmas will feel traditional and plan to do what they always do. A quarter (25%) feel Christmas will be more exciting this year, compared to 16% last year.

This positivity could prompt people to prepare for Christmas earlier this year – with 27% of respondents planning to start Christmas shopping and preparations earlier than they did last year.

Some 41% expect to do most, or all, of their Christmas shopping in physical stores.

However, despite this optimism, people are still worried about further disruption due to Covid-19. Nearly half (45%) are likely to put off making plans for Christmas until the last minute, and 30% might even celebrate Christmas early with friends or family.
