5 MINUTES WITH . . . Perfumer Christine Hassan

Perfumer Christine Hassan is passionate about perfumes, with her areas of expertise in fine fragrances and candles. She works for Drom, where Village Candle is among the company’s clients.

Christine, how did you first get into perfumery?

“I graduated with a masters degree in perfumery in 2010, and then trained at Drom Fragrances perfumery school. I’ve been working at the company in both the German and New York offices for the past six years.”

It sounds like you lead a very global life. Where’s home?

“I live in a loft in Brooklyn, New York, and my home is my own personal test site. It smells like a bouquet! In every room I have a fragrance that I’m working on, so it could be citrus in one room, fig in another and so on. My husband is basically oblivious – he has no sense of smell whatsoever!”

Where does your inspiration for new fragrances come from?

“I trained in sculpture and cinematography, so I frequently stroll through galleries, museums and art exhibitions to discover new artists, styles and sources of inspiration. I also draw inspiration from my love of travelling and hiking.”

What’s your own favourite fragrance?

“I love lots of fragrances, but my absolute favourite is Shalamar by Guerlain.”

What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve been given and what piece of advice would you give to someone else just starting out?

“Stick to it and follow your dreams. Hard work will be seen and rewarded.”

Which one item would you take to a desert island?

“It would have to be something that gives me peace of mind, so I would definitely take a pillow.”
