A Cut Above The Rest

The ITV 4 documentary series Made in Britain has featured many great British manufacturing businesses and their products, with one of the latest being Devon based UK crystal and glass manufacturers Dartington.

The 30 minute programme, shown last month, revealed to viewers how the company’s classic Dimple Double Old Fashioned tumbler is mouth-blown and hand crafted from molten crystal to create the iconic drinkware piece.

The filming included the design ethos of head designer Hillary Green, with commentary from commercial director Richard Halliday.

“Our hand-made glass making is very visual and makes great watching,” stated commercial director Richard Halliday. “We were delighted to be invited to take part in this production and it showed our brand and the skilled making team in a very positive way.”

At the beginning of December, Dartington directors Neil Hughes (managing director) Richard Halliday (commercial) and Alan Ramsay (finance) – supported by Barclays Bank – acquired the majority control of the Dartington business.

As the last factory scale producer of crystal in the UK, Dartington Crystal employs 130 staff at its Torrington HQ. The company also owns the Scottish Caithness Glass brand, Royal Brierley cut crystal and John Beswick ceramics.
