Christmas Gifts Tempt Black Friday Shoppers

Although Selfridges, M&S and House of Fraser are among the multiples who will be turning their backs on Black Friday this year, a report from OnBuy.com predicts that it will be another bonanza, with people spending £4.75 billion – both online and in store – when the annual promotion officially launches next Friday (November 23).

Some 66% of those surveyed said that planned to solely search for Christmas gifts for loved ones, with just over half (54%) using Black Friday as an opportunity to buy gifts for social occasions such as birthdays and weddings.

Additionally, the findings revealed that 60% of respondents will be shopping for homewares, and 44% will be looking to buy jewellery.

Although two thirds of Brits will opt to get a refund for Black Friday purchases that they no longer want to keep, 60% have admitted that they would give the items to family and friends as Christmas gifts.

“Black Friday has become a massive opportunity for UK retailers to drive sales and revenue in the important run up to Christmas,” comments Cas Paton, managing director of OnBuy.com. “Consequently, retailers have allocated significant resources to make a shopping spectacle, which successfully captures the attention and wallets of consumers. This year is certainly going to be no different, and this research provides a comprehensive insight into how Brits intend to splash their cash on the big day itself, with some products notably set to be more desirable then others.”
