What’s Trending: Green Is The Colour

For forward thinking gift retailers looking ahead to next Spring’s trends, Victoria Renshaw, lead futurist at Scarlet Opus, along with the company’s trend forecaster Phil Pond, predict that one of the strongest emerging trends for 2021 will be Soul Searching, a trend that focuses on transforming people’s homes and outdoor spaces into personal retreats.

“It promotes laid back luxury with South East Asian hallmarks, to include high impact, low maintenance potted ferns, palms with air purifying qualities and an abundance of lush green, eclectically patterned tabletop and serveware, to include leaf shaped bowls and cork place mats,” Victoria told attendees to her webinar during Exclusively Shows Digital last week.

“The trend speaks to consumers who want to connect with nature as their environmental awareness increases,” she explained. “These green tones also underline the suggestion of growth and renewal, important messages post pandemic. It’s a colour group that will resonate with consumers who are re-assured by greens on a very basic level, as the colour represents life and hope for the future.”

In addition to rich jungle greens and dark teals, other colours within the trend include papaya and yellow, with gold and yellow playing a significant role in feelings of positivityand promoting a feelgood glow.

“In 2021, yellow, part of the new Earth Age trend, will be seen as an optimistic, gender neutral colour with a laid back attitude, along with vivid associations with exotic holidays, fragrant spices and tropical fruits. The tones can be mellow and milky with a 1970’s vibe, through to ochre mustards, giving products a warm character,” Victoria highlighted. “It’s an uplifting colour for the home.”

According to Phil, people will also be more mindful about enjoying simple rituals such as making tea, and preparing and eating food, with cooking with fire – heat and eat – another trend that is set to elevate BBQs and related products.
